National Trust for Scotland Glencoe Visitor Centre

Glencoe Visitor Centre
Client: National Trust for Scotland

We were engaged by National Trust for Scotland  to design a new shop, cafe and exhibition space at their Glencoe Visitor Centre. The centre is in the heart of one of Scotland’s most famous landscapes, every part of the design had to be sensitive to the place and its long, sometimes dark history.

The existing complex of buildings was unable to cope with visitor numbers and the first stage of the project was to develop a strategy to increase capacity to accommodate projected future visitor numbers while improving both the facilities and quality of visitor experience. A key objective of the project was also to increase revenue through enhanced retail and F&B offers.

The project started in the summer of 2017 and was opened in April 2019. The fit out compromised of a temporary exhibition space, AV theatre complete with a new 10 minute film, a new shop and cafe offer, much of the interpretation is seamlessly incorporated into the design of these spaces. The entire fit out including an extension to the cafe had to be completed over the winter months while the visitor centre is closed so there was no loss of revenue for the trust.

Our design included complete detail of all spaces, furniture, sculptural installations, exhibits and graphics. As part of our scope we also designed a themed outdoor play area which will be delivered  in a later development phase.
