The World War One Gallery at Newhaven Fort offers visitors an immersive walkthrough across five distinct zones, each exploring a key aspect of the conflict. The exhibition provides a powerful overview of the First World War capturing the spirit of the era, the pride in serving one’s country, the hardship endured, and the immense global scale of the war that spanned continents.
 

The journey begins in the Recruitment pavilion filled with wartime propaganda, enlistment desks, and the voices of well-wishers bidding farewell, “it’ll be over by Christmas” as soldiers prepare to embark. This space evokes the optimism and almost celebratory atmosphere that accompanied the call to arms.
 

From there, visitors enter The Trenches, confronting the stark reality of war: the mud, the monotony, and the moments of terror when soldiers were ordered to go “up and over.”
